Vehicles nowadays are multi-networked pc's on wheels, everything is interlinked and faults can be very complex to diagnose.
Diagnostics on a modern vehicle is not something that you can truly master by 'playing at it' a few times a week.
This is the issue with most manufacturer dedicated garages and dealerships. Ninety five percent of their weekly workload is servicing, MOT's, tyres, brakes, etc.
The techs do a few diagnostic jobs each week when required and basically rely on the latest diagnostic tool to tell them whats wrong!
This is where your bill goes up, their mistakes cost you!
NONE of the plug in diagnostic tools (no matter how good) tell you what is wrong, they tell you what to test!
Any tool is only as good as its operator. Think of it this way, if you bought an expensive calculator would you then consider yourself an accountant?
I specialize in three brands and do diagnostics only, all day, every day with online manufacturer software access to each of the brands covered. ie no servicing, MOTs, tyres etc,
